Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day

I kept thinking on how to honor a wonderful role in the world without being too fluffy, reiterative, not original but I’m afraid that at the end I’ll be writing something pulled out from a purchased card, anyway here it goes.

I’m trying to remember all the Mother’s Day I had with my mom when we live in Mexico and how many times she told me NOT to buy her anything regarding house chores, gardening, cooking or “I thought you would like a new hobby” present, NOT to take her out for lunch or dinner that day because “there are endless waiting lines and bad service”, NOT to buy her flowers because they are “over priced just because of the day” and so on.

You may wonder how did we celebrate my mom? Well, we tried to surprise her one or two days before –or after- with a dinner and her favorite music (I still remember her face when my dad bought the first eight track tape for her car), during the dinner she always reminded my brother and me NOT to give her anything if it didn’t come from our heart, and that the BEST GIFT we could ever give her is to be a GOOD son and DAUGHTER not only one day of the year, but ALL THE YEAR because she was a mother not only one day of the year but all the year too.

Of course I’ve really tried to keep her advice on being a good daughter and celebrate Mother’s day with only things that came from my heart. Since I was five years old I remember crafting all kind of trinkets for her not only at school but at home too, and yes in all those years my mom cherished the awful little necklaces and bracelets I made with all sort of creative materials: paperclips, pasta shells, buttons, plastic straws, shoe laces, yarn, and clay. But you know something? The best part was that she wore all of them like if they were the most expensive jewelry in the planet.

Now I’m a mother too and believe it or not I told my girls EXACTLY the same thing my mom told me: a mother’s best gift is having great kids and having the opportunity to enjoy life with them –which of course I have-

But contrary to my mom I DO celebrate Mother’s Day… DOUBLE! May 10th like in Mexico and the second Sunday of May like in the US, so I’ll be spending the entire weekend with my girls, my husband and my three really old dogs, as any other weekend, having fun and trying to make the best of the day, with great food prepared by me, great music selected by my girls, and wonderful games sponsored by my husband.

Thank you mom for the lessons you gave me, and thank you dad for explaining to me the challenges of being a mother… now I understand.

Te quiero ma.

Tarot Inspiration

Tarot Inspiration

I was looking for inspiration today after buffing and sanding for almost three hours some pieces of jewelry, looking at them and thinking to myself “I wish I’ll be a lizard, maybe my fingers could grow back again!” My fingers were so soared and numbed for all the work, and at the end I was so frustrated because the pieces I was making didn’t end up as I expected, they were completely opposite to what I designed, the colors went wrong after baking the clay, some of them cracked, all my efforts clashed with a reality wall, my pieces were ruined and no matter how much effort I was using to “fix” them, at the end they were not good and I had to toss it all away.

I was so frustrated, and of course when you feel frustrated your creative side just shuts down, so after cleaning my working table and going back to square one –an empty space- I decided to browse some podcasts looking to find some inspiration in some of the episodes that I have on Tarot, healing, affirmations, crystals, angels, Bible. There I was listening to “The Language of Tarot” podcast when suddenly the episode just stops, like a glitch on the download you know? So I tapped on it several times to see if it came back or something, but instead of the episode I was listening a new podcast showed and started to play, odd isn’t it?

A random episode of the “Toronto Tarot Portal” started to play with Andrew McGregor and James Wells presenting the episode of Tarot and Meditation these 2 guys are amazing, marvelous, I never felt so relaxed with their tone of voice, they are Tarot professionals with a great idea of just teaching the Tarot not as a crystal ball to see into the future or an oracle, what I understood of the episode is how to be connected to the cards, how to visualize and meditate with the Tarot, and how the Tarot can be present in your life.

As I was listening to these guys and their knowledge on different card decks, their experience, how they connect a question to a card, not as a blunt answer but rather as how can you improve your life in order to get into a certain point, how can you use your inner strength and inner talents to achieve them, I realized that I have had working on different pieces without even paying attention, just enjoying my moment.

I really recommend you the “Toronto Tarot Portal” if you are into Tarot, meditation and visualization, Andrew and James have a great tone of voice, eloquent vocabulary and great examples.

Here are some of the things I created meanwhile I was listening to the podcast I hope you like it, and be blessed!

Token Jewelry

Token Jewelry

We all have a special something we wear for a job interview, before the big game, on a final test, when we travel or we give something that “captures” the feeling a person has on a certain special occasion and we want to make sure they will relive the moment every time they see it, well that special something is a token.

Without trying to write a treaty on jewelry I can tell you that token jewelry is of course designed to be worn, but it was also intended to enhance or highlight a particular mood, religious belief or spiritual significance.

Since prehistoric times jewelry was designed and worn as a protection from dangers, ornament and of course as status or rank; archeological sites have shown different ornaments made with shells, stone, bones, and in some cases feathers and animal skin. As the human race evolved and metalworking techniques were discovered jewelry production bloomed as a craft, status, fashion, trade and religious icons.

For example, in ancient Greece, jewelry was often used by women as offerings to deities and as dedications for thanksgiving for securing a loved one during wartime, in fulfillment of a vow, on a successful childbirth or for a cure.  But male jewelry from officials and civil men were customary at the temples, however they were in the form of wreath, armlets, shields, pectorals and family symbols or scuds.

But jewelry was not exclusive of individuals, as the matter of fact, the State and Priests were the fondest of using jewelry for ritual offerings, military symbols, ranks and of course… protection.

As the centuries passed by and religions spread throughout the world, jewelry reflected the dramatic influence of status, religious origin and protective belief. Materials such as gold and silver was destined for royalty, nobles and high ranked members of the clergy; while copper, iron and pewter was usually left for the rest of humbler origins. Whichever the case, the distinctive mark was the cryptic inscriptions or symbols crafted on the jewel as a token for protection, love, union, military victory, you name it.

But not everything in token jewelry is exclusively about magic or religious beliefs, nowadays the origin and significance is far broader: foreign languages alphabets, words and colors, crystals and gemstones, universal symbols even vintage objects.  Everything that denotes something special to us and makes us feel better is more powerful because of the energy and feeling we “place” on it.

Do you wear a special token? I know I do, actually… several of them! it all depends on what am I going to do, go or feelings I have.

Monthly, Zodiac, Chakra or Angel crystals? What to choose?

Monthly, Zodiac, Chakra or Angel crystals? What to choose?

Monthly birthstones, Zodiac gemstones, Chakra or Angel related crystals which one to use?

It all depends on what your intuition tells you, how you feel regarding aligning your belief system toward one or another, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable on what are you going to wear or use as a token.

I know many people read their horoscopes but actually don’t “believe” on what they are reading and others won’t go out of their house without consulting (Zodiac, Angel cards, Bible verses) what is ahead so they can dodge hard situations or jump right at opportunities when the signs telling them so (I’m one of those), in choosing the crystal you are going to use as a token or amulet or just because you want to find  YOUR crystal is exactly the same, you must feel comfortable that your belief system is aligned to the token before wearing one.

I researched many authors and references to correctly use and mix different materials, crystals and gemstones when designing my jewelry and tokens, I try to keep it simple just by month and Chakras, you can use it as quick reference table for energy correspondence and for the simple pleasure of knowing something new.
